Reading Group

In September we discussed a book set in modern Glasgow “Shuggie Bain” by Douglas Stuart. I can’t say that we “enjoyed” this book due to the harrowing tale of life for a young lad in the Glasgow slums.

The librarian is being very helpful in finding books for us; we often follow the Library’s Crime Café by reading their monthly set murder mystery book. Next month’s Reading Group book is “A Matter of Murder” by Ann Granger.

Weekenders

The Weekenders’ October Newsletter was sent out on 1st October. Once again, many thanks to Margaret Whilde & Lindsay Smith for printing off copies for those members not on email and for delivering them on their morning walks.

We had Broomhill birthday lunches for Margaret White and Jean Green, followed by a social afternoon at Lindsay Smith’s home on 16th September.

We plan an outing to Mercia Marina near Derby on 17th October as well as two Broomhill Birthday lunches this month. We are also having two Coffee Club meet ups, due to having to cancel the September one. The end of October will find us discussing “My Schooldays”. Unfortunately, the Weekenders Group is full at present but I would be more than happy to help someone start up a second Weekenders.

Lunch Group

On the 28th September we enjoyed lunch at Ego At The Ashfields. Then on October 26th we are going to The Little John at Ravenshead, followed on 23rd November by a visit to The Nuthall for our lunch. A £5 deposit is required for these events.

The Christmas Lunch looks to be a very enjoyable one with more diners than last year. As usual we shall be going to the Albert Hall on Wednesday, 21st December. We are always made so welcome there and our regulars always look forward to this event, so please come and join us. I now have the menu which is a three-course meal for £21.50. Deposit £10 in October please.

Ukulele Group

A performance by nine members of the Group was well received at September’s Hog Roast, audience participation was excellent especially the additional percussion (table banging).

The group performed the Hucknall Ukulele Band (best band in the land) and the u3a Anthem followed by a few familiar sings and a redition of ‘When You Walk in the Room’, one of the new songs the Group have introduced to their repertoire which was enhanced with instrumental inclusions by Richard.

The Group has nineteen members but would welcome anyone who would like to have a go. If you enjoy singing the popular songs on the past 70 years, yes 70, then contact Vivian, on the form below, to arrange a visit:-
