History Group

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members especially new ones. Our usual indoor meeting place is Central Methodist Church: time 2pm – 4pm ish – on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are now in the Church Room which it is hoped will be much better for those members who have hearing problems. I have asked for us to continue with this booking. We have had some problems with visual images and sound which I am attempting to overcome.

The autumn season commenced on September 21st, 2022 when Denis Hill who is a brilliant speaker told us about ‘Victorian Housing Conditions’ which is a century or so before most of the bureaucracy and health and safety rules came into being. It would no doubt cover the lifetimes of our great grandparents and even maybe some of our members who didn’t live in towns.

Kath Hurt was presented with a winter flower arrangement in a planter to say a sincere ‘thank you’ for all she has done for the group in the past.

Our October meeting is Wednesday 19th when we have a re-arranged visit to The Derby Museum of Making. We leave Hucknall at 1pm and leave derby at 5pm. If you have any queries about the visit please contact Kathy William or Sue Knight

November 16th, 2022 Trevor Lee is coming to talk to us. He usually provides us with mind pictures of entertainers; sometimes even their voices. Lots of reminiscing at this meeting.

Bye for now – Maureen

Gardening Group

A select and intrepid group of gardeners met last month for the final Gardening Group trip of the year to Newby Hall in Yorkshire. We were not disappointed with all that the Gardens had to offer, and enjoyed a lovely day out with good weather. Some viewed the gardens by boat and by train as well as on foot and others also visited the Hall which has a very interesting history. Newby Hall is well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

Our next two meetings are at the John Godber Centre, from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm, in the room downstairs. Please note the time! October’s meeting on the 18th is entitled ‘A Plethora of Plants’, followed by the usual refreshments.

We are an open group and all are welcome, especially new members, even if you do not have a garden. The NGS website still has interesting gardens for you to visit online and in person, and to enjoy what other people have done with their gardens this year.

Grumpy Old Men – Ambergate

Excursion to Ambergate

Members of our Grumpy Old Men group were out and about again at Ambergate recently. They visited the ‘Great British Car Journey’ exhibition, which displays around 150 cars, all made in the UK, mainly up to the 1990s.

There were also a number of large banners which portray some of the advertising of the period, often quite stylish. The commentary which visitors can listen to narrated a lot of the history of the industry, and its ups and downs, of which there were quite a few over the decades.

Earlier cars, such as the Austin 7, looked very small, but some of the bigger cars of the 1960s and 70s were sometimes surprisingly large.

It is also possible to go for a drive in an old car around the site, but by this time it was approaching lunchtime in the conveniently sited café!

We always have room for more Grumpies, just use the email which is listed in the Newsletter or use the form below:-
