Fun with Languages

Our September meeting went well and we discussed different verbs, uses and endings; also we began again our story on Youtube episodes 1 and 2 Mi Vida Loca. We shall continue with this next time plus a wordsearch using the vocabulary from the series to help us remember it!

Sadly we were very depleted in numbers as many were on holiday, and some have decided not to continue. We meet on Thursday 13th October 10.30 am in the Byron suite at the John Godber Centre, so hopefully all our travellers will have returned and had a great time.

As I type this, I feel very sad at the recent loss of our wonderful Queen Elizabeth. She was a wonderful Queen and a special lady of faith and service. She will be greatly missed.

Adios,
Ann and Liz.

Message from our Chair

Our next monthly meeting is on Wednesday, 14th September, 2002 and I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. Please ensure that you enter the building from the car park rear entrance and book in at the desk. Please try to remember to wear your name badges so that folks (especially new members) know who you are, if a group leader or committee member, again pleased wear your ID so that others know who they are talking to. Please remember to either silence or turn off your mobile phones.

The holiday period is drawing to a close, I trust that those of you that have been away, enjoyed your breaks and are refreshed and raring to go. If you still have holidays planned then good luck, have a nice time.

This month’s guest speaker is Sally Smith, talking about ‘Magnificent Women and Flying Machines’ sounds intriguing.

After our coffee break, David Rose will be telling us about four groups and what they get up to – Easy Wheelers, Pickleball, Science and the Short Walks groups.

If you are a new member, looking for activity groups to join, there is a list of groups in our newsletter and on our website, or talk to Sue Tedstone our co-ordinators co-ordinator. We are starting two new groups, Wine Group 3 and a Bridge Group.

We have a volunteer to edit our October newsletter, however, we are looking for someone to be our Deputy Editor, to cover for Steve, when he is on holiday. Please talk to either myself or Steve.

Advanced notice that we will not be having a formal monthly meeting in December, however, we are planning to have a ‘Film Afternoon’ for those that want to come and watch, these have been popular in the past.

September Scams

Fake Currys email giveaway
New phishing emails impersonating the well-known electrical retailer Currys offer you the chance to win a free Smeg kettle. The email contains a dodgy link leading to a website where you’re asked to complete a survey about your shopping habits and pay a delivery fee to receive the ‘free’ kettle. Obviously this leads to you giving bank details to pay for the delivery charge.

Fake energy refund emails circulating again
We sent out a warning about this in May, but it’s back and doing the rounds. With the energy price cap announcement, please be cautious of any energy emails appearing in your inbox. The government help with your fuel costs will be taken off your bill by your energy supplier over six months discounts. Winter fuel allowances will be paid in the same way as always.

Think Five
If you get any cold calls or emails, always take five seconds, just to think, can this be true, sounds too good? Then usually it is.

u3a 40th Anniversary

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the u3a organisation in the UK and The Notts u3a Network are planning a week of events from Saturday 18th to Saturday, 24th September 2022. We have about half a dozen volunteers, so many thanks to you all.

The Flash Mob is taking place on Saturday, 24th September, at HIGHFIELDS PARK which is situated on University Boulevard at Lenton, NG7 2RD and is accessible via the NET tram service from Hucknall.

The day’s activities will be:-

12.00: Set up
13.00: Steelband
13.30: Beacons & Banners arrive
14.00: Flash Mob
14.30: Steel Band
15.30: Finish

The details of the dance have been sent to all taking part in the form of a video, along with dates and venues for practices. Still not too late to join in, see Lynda Smeathers our Activities Organiser for details.

It promises to be a good afternoon out, take a picnic and watch the fun.

Not So Grumpy Old Men

In July, a small very select group of the ‘not so grumpies’ visited the Ten Pin Bowling Alley in Nottingham. Despite several attempts to handicap him, our winner was our very own Mr John Saunders, seen here about to be crowned with his trophy.

Regrettably he moved just before it contacted, so there is a good chance that he will go on to win again at our next competitive activity. We moved on to have a buffet lunch at the Chinese restaurant May Sum on parliament Street. Never knew so few men could eat so much, definitely need to exercise after.

In August a dozen of us visited The Southwell Workhouse for some cultural education, very interesting and amazing that the workhouse operated so recently. The lives of the inmates were extremely hard, families being split into separate dormitories, for men, women and children. Everyone having to work 12 hours a day carrying out very boring and monotonously repetitive tasks. Very basic food being available which was the same every mealtime. If you visit, note there are lots of steep, stone stairs. However, well worth a visit.

Surprisingly, after the workhouse we ended up at The White Post Inn for our lunch on the A614, before finding our way home for a well earned rest!!

In September, we are hoping to visit the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, but more about that next month.
