Singalong

We went back to the sixties at our last session, and the music brought back memories for many of our members – amazing how we can remember the words to those songs but not to the songs we hear now!

Here are our plans for the next few sessions:-

April 19th – Novelty Songs
May 17th – Celebration of the Platinum Jubilee- details to follow!
June 21st – Folk Music & Country & Western.

Any new members are welcome to come along.

History Group

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members. Our usual meeting place is Central Methodist Church: time 2 pm – 4 pm (ish)

Our next meeting is on April 20th, 2022, when we visit Cromford Mill. We will have a guided tour of the buildings plus the Arkwright Experience. Leave Hucknall 12 noon – leave Cromford 4.30 pm to arrive Hucknall 5.30 pm (ish)

The next indoor meeting on Wednesday, May 18th, was to have been a presentation by Stephen Flinders but he is unwell at present and won’t be able to come. It means I am looking for a replacement or you will have to manage with something I can put together. In any case it will be a surprise???

At the next main meeting Kath and Kathy will be taking bookings for our much delayed visit to Doddington Hall in June – price £22.

I have also contacted Kieran about the Bennerley Viaduct History tour as suggested at the last meeting and he would like to know how many of us to expect. I will be taking names at the next main meeting for what is likely to be an evening visit and probably a coach journey would be best

Bye for now – Maureen

Hucknall’s Heroes – Book Launch and History Day

HUCKNALL HERITAGE SOCIETY
Are proud to present a

BOOK LAUNCH & HISTORY DAY

Saturday, 9th April, 2022 from 11 am to 3 pm
at East Side Methodist Church, Bestwood Road, Hucknall.

Free Admission. Refreshments available

NEW BOOK – HUCKNALL’S HEROES.
When the Great War began in 1914 the town of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, had a population of around 16,000. During the following five years, over 3,000 Hucknall men enlisted into the armed forces to fight for King and country. Over 400 of them never came back. Of those that did return, many suffered for the rest of their lives.

After two years of research, Andy McKinnon has found over 2,600 of those men. This book tells their story.

Fun with Languages

Our meeting in March began Spanish from scratch and we were delighted to meet several new members, who all seemed to survive the fun and chaos so far! We hope to see you all at our next meeting on 14th April at the John Godber Centre, Byron Suite, 10.30 till 12 noon and subscriptions will be collected then, I am afraid.

We shall continue in our course looking at YouTube Ana and numbers, and other things. As Covid is on the increase, please do not come if you have a cold etc. and we shall ventilate the room so dress appropriately; also please wear a mask if you feel you want to, the John Godber Centre still encourage this. We all try to look out for each other.

There is still time to join us this April if you wish. Folks are welcome.

Wanted – Grumpy Old Men

After the recent enforced period of grumpiness, our Grumpy Old Men group is looking for more members to join them. We take it in turns to organise a day out to a place or activity of interest within reasonable distance of Hucknall, usually once a month. Before lockdown, some of our recent visits had been to the Museum of Timekeeping at Upton (everyone arrived early), Nottingham Council House for a guided tour, and Nottingham Justice Centre (no-one was locked up). Our excursions usually include a meal afterwards as well.

We are about to resume our activities for 2022. At the moment, we have our first 3 visits organised as follows, and space is available for each visit if you would like to join us – just get in touch:

Derby Museum of Making – Tuesday 29th March
Nottingham Tram HQ & Depot – Friday 29th April
National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire – Wednesday 18th May

If you are a sufficiently grumpy old man, or you know somebody who is, you can get in touch by via the form below or have a chat with John Tedstone at the next monthly meeting on Wednesday 13th April.
