Reading Group

We held a Reading Group session in May when we discussed the set book “Away With The Penguins” by Hazel Prior. This was a delightful story with a bonus of little sidebar information about adele penquins presented in an engaging way.

The set book for June was “Your Neighbour’s Wife” by Tony Parsons with lots of twists and turns.

The set book for July will be “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. I could not believe it when the library told me there were only two copies of this book in the whole of Nottinghamshire libraries and these were for “easy readers” – so luckily those of us who already had our own copies will re-read them and then lend them to the rest of the group.

Weekenders

The Weekenders May Newsletter will be sent out on 1st June. Once again, many thanks to Margaret Whilde & Lindsay Smith for printing off copies for those members not on email and for delivering them on their morning walks.

We met up for coffee at Brooke Farm, Linby on Friday, 6th May when there was a big discussion on the state of the NHS at the moment!

Our Coffee Club session last month was on the last Friday of the month (April 29th) at Papplewick Village Hall, when we discussed plans for the next couple of months’ activities. We also brought items which brought memories back for us to re-tell to members.

Future Coffee Club sessions will go back to the last Saturday of the month at my house (on 28th May) reverting back to pre-Covid times.

We met up for lunch at Keycraft Garden Centre on Friday, 13th and also had an outing on 24th May to Jacksdale Garden Centre. We plan a Jubilee Afternoon Tea at Morton’s Farm on 4th June. It would be nice to get back to having our Social Evenings in members’ homes but no volunteers so far! Would anyone like to host a Garden Meet up instead?

Lunch Group

On Wednesday, May 25th, 2022, seventeen of us went to The Magna Charta at Lowdham; on Wednesday, 22nd June we will be at The Thorn Tree at Woodlinkin (a “George’s” restaurant) and I will email the menu for you to let me have your pre-orders.

On 27th July we are going to The Royal Oak at Westwood but again I don’t yet have the menu.

Visit to Canons Ashby
Our May visit took the group into Northamptonshire and the Canons Ashby Estate which was enjoyed by many members for the first time. We set off in beautiful sunshine on what was to become the hottest day of the year and which added to the enjoyment of the day while the sun continued to shine.

A journey of an hour and a half saw us arrive at 11.00 am to enjoy the day. After booking in at the reception area and a short chat about the venue from a member of the National Trust, the group eagerly started their day.

Over the day members toured the House, explored the grounds with its three different walks, enjoyed a look around the church and sat out at the lovely cafe. Many members particularly liked their look around the extensive tiered gardens which were a major part of the grounds.
A nice feature was a video tour of the House which enabled one of our party to sit comfortably and enjoy a virtual tour of the House thereby avoiding the staircases.

Everyone was back on the coach in good time to depart for home at 4.00pm and with traffic relatively light on the M1 the members going on to a certain football match had plenty of time to reach the ground before kick off.!!

Packwood House Visit – Monday, 13th June, 2022
Our next visit is to Packwood House in Warwickshire on the above date. We will be leaving Hucknall Market at the usual time of 9.30am. There are a few places available which you can book by emailing me at nationaltrust@hucknallu3a.org.uk

Our trip in July is to the rather special venue of Waddesdon Manor, owned by the Rothschild Family. This visit will take place on Wednesday, 20th July, leaving at 8.30am to allow for the extra journey time. Bookings can be made from June 20th onwards. The cost is £14 per person for the coach fare.

Barrie Saunders
