Litter Picking

Litter Picking

The hot weather we experienced during June is not really conducive to spending a lot of time litter picking in the searing heat. Nevertheless 13 bags of litter have been collected by some hardy members of the group. It is a timely reminder not just to the litter pickers but to all u3a members during a heatwave to:

·         Keep exposure to the sun to a minimum

·         Wear light, airy clothing including a sun hat

·         Use high-factor suncream

·         Keep hydrated.

In May 15 bags of litter were collected by various members of the group.

With the onset of better weather there is an increase in food sellers, particularly on Hucknall bypass. Its just a pity that patrons of these food sellers cannot afterwards place their food and drink receptacles in the nearby litter bins – or even dispose of them at home if the bins are already full. The council are quite good at collecting the bags of litter we leave for them but if the bags are left for any length of time, even overnight, they are soon ripped open by the local wildlife and the contents scattered around. Back to square one!

Members of the Litter Picking Group took advantage of April’s lovely sunny weather and in total collected 21 bags of rubbish from our area.

Two new members to the group, Jill and Sue, went out on their inaugural litter pick, thus ‘doing their bit’ to help make our environment a better place to live. Thank you and well done Jill and Sue.

Should anyone else wish to join our litter picking group please contact me as per the interest group details at the end of the newsletter. A tabard and equipment will be provided.

In March a total of 20 bags of rubbish were collected by members of the group.

One member, Maureen, sent out a request for help in clearing litter around the bushes near Butler’s Hill Tram stop before the spring growth. There were a few offers of help but eventually this request was met by David R. Together they collected 6 bags of general rubbish, several tins of ‘stuff’, a nitrous oxide (laughing gas) cylinder, a pair of pants, a shirt, a coat, 2 bags and an umbrella frame. It was difficult for them getting to rubbish in the brambles but the area now looks much tidier so a big thank you goes to Maureen and David for their efforts.

If anyone knows of any ‘grot-spots’ which need our attention please let us know and we will do our best to help.

With the onset of longer daylight hours and an improvement in the weather, litter louts seem to have been out and about more – but so have our litter pickers who have managed to clear our areas of 25 bags of rubbish during February. The most bizarre item which one litter picker found this month in Washdyke Lane Park was a large traffic bollard which has since been placed next to a litter bin in readiness for collection by the council.

Starting on Monday 3rd March Ashfield District Council are rolling out ‘The BIG Ashfield Spring Clean’ as part of their commitment to make Ashfield a cleaner place to live, work and visit. Residents are invited to dispose of a small amount of bagged household waste during their designated week and on top of this, Flying Skips will be out and about across the District for you to dispose of extra waste, toys and bric-a-brac. See the Ashfield District Council website for full details.
