National Trust Visits 2023

I can now confirm the dates and prices for the first three National Trust visits which were previously notified.

The first visit is to Calke Abbey on Monday 27th of March, 2023. We will be leaving from the bus stop on Hucknall Market Place at 9.30 am and returning from the venue at 4.00 pm. The cost of the coach is £10 per person. We are repeating this visit from 2022 due to many requests from group members.

Bookings will be taken by email at nationaltrust@hucknallu3a.org.uk from 27th February, 2023. Payment can be made at the March monthly meeting or by posting/dropping off a cheque to my address at 8 Hadley Close, Sherwood Gate, Linby, Nottingham. NG15 8LD. Please put cheques in an envelope with the names of all the people being paid for on the outside. Please note that as per u3a rules monies can only be refunded if I am able to resell your seat. We will again be travelling with JB Tours.

Tuesday, 25th April, 2023 a visit to Upton House in Oxfordshire. We will leave Hucknall Market Place at 9.00 am, with bookings being accepted from March 25th.

Wednesday, May 24th, 2023 will see us visit Hanbury Hall in Warwickshire again leaving Hucknall Market at 9.00 am with bookings accepted from April 24th.

Both these visits cost £15 for coach travel.

National Trust members obviously gain free entry to the venues but non-National Trust members may pay for entry on the day with costs averaging out at about £10.

New members are always welcome so please get in touch if you wish to be added to the group list.

Short Walks

On Thursday, 19th January, 2023 on our third attempt on a beautiful sunny, cold clear day with frozen ground underfoot we completed the walk from Hollybeck Garden Centre. The previous failed attempts were due to torrential rain on the proposed days.

23 members enjoyed the walk which was extended slightly to the village of Halloughton to avoid an especially rutted field system making it nearer 5 miles than the original 4. It was nice to finish at the garden centre cafe for a welcome warm drink at the end.

The next walk is on February 16th, 2023, to Annesley and Newstead Country Park.

Fun with Languages

Sadly our group in January was a bit reduced due to illness. So we hope that all those who have been poorly will recover quickly and can make next month.

We continued in Spanish with our Drama and further vocabulary relating to the story. Next month will be the same and hopefully we will try to complete it and put ourselves out of our mounting tension and excitement as to how it will end!!

Some are finding the drama quite stretching in terms of vocabulary and grammar. So we need to spend some time and thought on a way forward after it has ended. Originally, we started with bursts of 4 languages, all much simpler. Perhaps you can give some thought in how we might continue please?

As always, new folks are welcome to just pop in or join us.

Ann and Liz.

Mid-Length Walking Group

It was good to see 28 of us in Nottingham recently for our winter City walk. A bit chilly at the start, but one of our group remembered warmer days getting the train to Skegness from the now-disappeared London Road High Level station, when we paused to try and work out where the station had been!

The area around the Canal at London Road has mostly been redeveloped over recent decades and it is now quite difficult to recall the old buildings and structures. We also boosted Wetherspoons’ takings with our morning coffee stop! Our photo stop was near Castle Marina – spot the non-U3A person!

Our next walk be a local walk led by Mark Thornley, on Monday 20th February, 2023.

Flower Arranging – Urgent Update

The John Godber Centre has had to cancel the Flower Arranging booking on the 6th February 2023 for the Beer Festival to go ahead. The Beer Festival is a real money spinner for the centre so it is understandable. Sorry for the short notice.

If you were going to come to the session as your first time can you please contact Siobhan, either by email or the contact form below, as she is trying to find an alternative venue but it is short notice.
