Science

At our January meeting we were pleased to welcome two of the academic staff from Nottingham Trent University.

Dr Amy Twigger Holroyd who is an Associate Professor of Fashion and Sustainability in the School of Art & Design. She leads research projects at the intersection of fashion, making, design and sustainability. She also contributes to BA and MA teaching and supervises PhD students.

Dr Katherine Townsend a researcher, educator, practitioner and Professor in Fashion and Textile Practice in the Fashion, Textiles and Knitwear department in the School of Art and Design. She is a PhD supervisor who contributes to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.

The theme of their presentations was sustainability in fashion and a focus on reusing and reshaping discarded clothing/material. They described some of the research and community projects around reuse and sustainability that they are currently involved in. It was a lively session with lots of interesting questions from the members.

It may be a cliché, but the mantra “buy less and buy better” is key when we consider that a staggering 100 billion garments are being produced globally every year. Before making a purchase, maybe we should ask ourselves three all-important questions:
‘What are you buying and why? What do you really need? Will you wear it at least 30 times?’

Thanks to Christine Vincent for arranging this link with the university.

Friday, 17th February Meeting
John Tedstone will follow up his presentation about the Severn Barrier with a current very ambitious proposal to erect a barrier to produce energy across the Wash.

In part 2, a change of topic when I will go full David Attenborough to consider animal extinction, re wilding and facts about some endangered species.

Litter Picking Group

At least 17 bags of litter have been collected by the group in January. One member identified an area where there is a particular problem with litter – the jitty running through the allotments between Beauvale Road and Garden Road, Hucknall. Consequently four members got together on a bright and sunny January day and cleared the area and the surrounding roads. Unfortunately some litter louts seem to take great pleasure in throwing their bottles, cans and used food receptacles etc over the hedges into the allotments making it impossible for us to collect. I won’t record what I think of these litter louts!

If anyone in Hucknall & District u3a is aware of an area which needs our attention please let me know and I will organise a group litter pick and of course if anyone wishes to join the group you will be made very welcome.

Not So Grumpy Old Men

The NSGOM enjoyed their now customary start to the new year activities by visiting the Spot On club to occupy eight tables for two hours of snooker.

While the professional world of snooker is rife with fixing allegations there was little evidence of such activity at this event!! While the skills were often lacking, the event proved very enjoyable with most members playing three matches during the afternoon. A big thank you to Greg Umney for once again organising the day.

The group took the opportunity to plan future events for 2023 which include Indoor Cricket at the Leisure Centre in February, a visit to the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington in March and a trip to Southwell Minster in April.

Later in the year the group hope to visit the Climbing Centre at Phoenix Park, The Headstocks at the former Clipstone Colliery, play Croquet at Highfields, play Crazy Golf at Ramsdale Golf Club in Calverton and of course also attend the latter venue for now annual Christmas meal in late November.

A busy year ahead!!!

History Group

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members especially new ones. Our indoor meeting place is Central Methodist Church: time 2pm – 4pm ish – on the 4th Wednesday of the month for this month only. The date to remember is the 22nd of February. The change is due to the Beer Festival at John Godber Centre. Meetings are now in the Church Room which has proved much better for those members who have hearing problems. We have had some problems with visual images and sound but with special thanks to our member Greg they seem to have been overcome.

The next meeting is February 22nd at Central when Bob Massey is coming to give a presentation about “The Robins”. The history of the Post Office and our postal services. Look forward to seeing you then.

Kathy and Sue will be at John Godber on February 15th to take your bookings for the visit to Bassetlaw Museum at Retford on April 19th where we will see the Pilgrims Gallery display. Leaving Hucknall Ogle Street at 11am – leave Retford at 4pm. Return to Hucknall 5pm ish. Cost is £10. There is no café at the museum but there is a Wetherspoons next door for food and drinks.

Singalong

Our January Singalong was themed as “Happy Songs” and it certainly cheered up a good number of enthusiastic people in a lovely warm room despite the frost outside.

Our February theme is (back by request) Show Songs. All are welcome.
