Litter Picking Group

With the onset of spring and better weather, members of the litter picking group have been out and about more – but so have the litter louts! To date 35 bags of litter have been collected by the group during the month of February and there could have been more if there were more hours in the day and more free time to do it. There are too many ‘grot-spot’ areas to mention but if anyone has a problem with litter in any particular area please let me know and we will endeavour to clear it.

Of course there is always room in the group for more members so if anyone is interested in joining us please contact me at litter@hucknallu3a.org.uk

Litter Picking Group

At least 17 bags of litter have been collected by the group in January. One member identified an area where there is a particular problem with litter – the jitty running through the allotments between Beauvale Road and Garden Road, Hucknall. Consequently four members got together on a bright and sunny January day and cleared the area and the surrounding roads. Unfortunately some litter louts seem to take great pleasure in throwing their bottles, cans and used food receptacles etc over the hedges into the allotments making it impossible for us to collect. I won’t record what I think of these litter louts!

If anyone in Hucknall & District u3a is aware of an area which needs our attention please let me know and I will organise a group litter pick and of course if anyone wishes to join the group you will be made very welcome.

Litter Picking Group

As expected December was rather a slow month for litter picking – unsurprisingly members had got other things to do on the run up to Christmas. However, two members discovered a way of shaking off a Christmas Day hangover on a cold and windy but sunny Boxing Day. They collected 3 bags of rubbish between them by chasing blowing litter near to where they live. That’s dedication for you!

If anyone wishes to make a New Year resolution to come and join our litter picking group, please feel free to do so. You will be made very welcome and please be assured that chasing after litter on a windy day is not compulsory! I can be contacted via the contact form below:-

It’s been rather a slack month litter picking with just five bags collected during November. However, that’s five bags of rubbish that would still be a blot on the landscape if it hadn’t been collected by members of our group.

We had been asked by Veolia if with some other organisations and schools we would help make a fun Christmas video by singing some amended words to the song We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Some of us were up for it but, unfortunately, Veolia had to cancel at the last minute. Perhaps they’d got wind of our singing ability – or lack thereof! Apologies to the litter pickers with tuneful voices!

All that remains is to wish all members of Hucknall & District u3a a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2023 and add that if anyone wishes to make a new year resolution to come and join our litter picking group, please feel free to do so. You will be made very welcome. Just contact me via telephone or email litter@hucknallu3a.org.uk

    Litter Picking Group

Fifteen bags of litter have been collected in our area by the group during October. There is always plenty more so if anyone else would like to join the group and give us some help please feel free to contact me either by telephone or by email at litter@hucknallu3a.org.uk

We do not meet on specific days, some members prefer to litter pick on their own near to home, others litter pick in pairs and if there is a particular problem in an area we get together as a group which serves the purpose of collecting the litter and also flying the flag for Hucknall & District u3a.

We have distinctive tabards which are provided along with the basic stick, hoop holder and bags. Filled bags can be left for collection next to council waste bins. Litter picking is not an arduous task but sometimes you find that once you start you just can’t stop so end up walking further than intended! One of the most gratifying things about it though is when members of the public stop and thank you for what you are doing or motorists pip their horns and give you the thumbs up as they pass by. A little praise and encouragement goes a long way.
