    Film Club

Before the Pandemic a number of our members would attend the Thursday Silver Screen, at The Broadway Cinema. The reason may have been that two showings of a popular film would be shown that day at the low price of £5. The Broadway Cinema was easily accessible for Hucknall residents, the cinema being just around the corner from the Lace market Tram stop. Also the fact that free tea and coffee and biscuits could be had in the cafe before the film and that the films were chosen as being suitable for an audience of Senior Citizens. In addition there is a discount for members of the u3a.

These Thursday sessions have now recommenced and next week 17th February, 2022, at 10.30 am and 13.30 pm the film being shown will be The Eyes of Tammy Faye, one of the most famous and renowned women in American history.

The following week, Thursday 24th the film will be Death on the Nile, with Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench. also at 10.30 am and 13.30 pm.

If you go make sure that you get there in good time to get your tickets and refreshments.

    Arts and Films Information

Although there is insufficient reliable information on concerts and such to warrant a bulletin of planned program’s; film information is a much more positive situation. All cinemas in our area are now showing films, albeit that they are restricting audiences with a heavy emphasis on protection.

Our two local venues of The Arc and The Bonington are both issuing programmes and in the past month Colleen and I have enjoyed four showings sitting safely spaced out over 25% of the theatres.

Please contact me if you would like to be included in the circulation of the calendar each month. This year I plan to separate off the cinema section into The Film Club and I will attempt to include a description of what each film is about and who is in each film.

When booking seats at The Bonington on line you are asked to select your seats from a seating plan which only offers safe seats. The bar is open and drinks both alcoholic or coffee are available to take into the film with you.

      Christmas Zoom Film Show

Christmas Zoom Film Show – Thursday December 17th at 1.30pm

‘Miracle on 34th Street’, American comedy film, released in 1947, that has become a perennial family favourite at Christmastime.

Natalie Wood portrayed Susan Walker, a precocious little girl whose well-meaning mother (played by Maureen O’Hara) has raised her not to believe in Santa Claus. When their lives intersect with that of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), an elderly man hired to play Santa at New York City’s famous Macy’s department store, Susan begins to suspect he may be the real St. Nick. After a jealous fellow employee frames him for an assault, Kringle is placed in a mental hospital. At the ensuing sanity hearing, Kringle and his attorney attempt to prove that he is indeed Santa Claus.

Although the movie was released in the summer, it became a box-office hit and ran in theatres through the holiday season. Its legacy is such that it is regularly aired on television right after Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, and the store has frequently decorated its windows during the Christmas season with displays based on the film. The popularity of Miracle on 34th Street is due in part to the performances of Gwenn, who won an Academy Award, and Wood.
