Wed October 28th: ‘The Good Die Young’
25 members enjoyed time out in our virtual cinema watching a classic British crime thriller about a robbery that went wrong. It was an interesting look back at post war UK in the mid 50’s.

Dead End (1937 film)
Dead End is a 1937 crime drama film directed by William Wyler. It is an adaptation of the Sidney Kingsley 1935 Broadway play of the same name. It stars Joel McCrea, Sylvia Sidney, and Humphrey Bogart. It was the first film appearance of the Dead End Kids. It was nominated for 4 Oscars.

A Film Critics Review: It’s a dead end street in New York that ends at the river. It’s here that a wide assortment of characters from different walks of life come together in a pressure cooker setting. Rich, poor, kind-hearted and hardhearted all come together. In Dead End, a young woman and her teenage brother struggle to survive. An architect works for a better life. A gangster comes home to visit his mother. A well kept woman chooses between love and wealth. The rich and the poor get glimpses of one another’s lives at the water’s edge.

This movie draws us into a unique place and time. It gives us intimate portraits into people’s lives. It makes contrasts and it shows similarities between people. It’s one of a kind and director William Wyler has given us something special here. Sylvia Sidney, Humphrey Bogart, Marjorie Main, Allen Jenkins, the Dead End Kids and Ward Bond give standout performances. The 1930’s atmosphere is palpable. I rate this film 91/100. It’s unique and absorbing.

Here is the latest information to enable you to visit the new local cinema, The ARC, (previously Byron Cinema).

For those of you who are not aware that the ARC is now open, complete with upholstered seats, etc, a full programme of what is on offer can be obtained by visiting its website www.hucknall.arccinema.co.uk

The website shows the films on offer and which one of the 3 screens being used. Parking can be obtained either on the Tram Park ‘n’ Ride (free), Piggins Croft and also the Market Place. Prices for Seniors are £7.75 Most films are shown 2 or 3 times per day. Tickets can be bought either by visiting the Foyer (ticket Machine for cards),at reception or on line or on phone.

Good luck to this new experience in Hucknall and solving the problem of our Byron building here in Hucknall.

Our New Cinema

I am sure that most of our U3A members are now aware that our new cinema, The ARC, is now open and at a difficult time for cinemas in general. Some of you may be still worried about your safety from the virus in the cinemas, but your fears should be allayed by the fact that the government does not require you to wear face coverings in cinemas. Also seating within the cinema is well spaced out to respect social distancing and sanitisation measures within the cinema are extensive.

In respect of the fact that there are no new films currently being released The Arc have reduced their prices to £6.50 whist having to show slightly older films and calling them Summer Classics.

Reports received from patrons are that seating is excellent with electric recliner upholstered seats, excellent sound and air conditioning. Refreshments are available including alcohol.

Meerkat Movies – I am still trying to understand this but it appears that if you use “Compare The Market” then you can get a 2-for-1 offer. Meerkat ticket offers can only be purchased from the ticket office in the Foyer. All other tickets can be purchased on line or on the phone.

If going by car the nearest car park is the Park n Ride Tram stop (free) also the Market Place and Piggins Croft.
