On Thursday 20th July, 14 of the Not So Grumpy Old Men met up at Ramsdale Golf Club to try their hand at the renowned Pirate Crazy Golf.

With names out of a hat, we split into two teams of 4 and two teams of 3. Issued with our putter, ball and score sheets, we set off to see if any of us would be spotted for the Masters Championship.

The course consisted of 18 holes of varying complexity and with our basic lack of ability, soon proved to be harder than expected.

The rules stated no more than 7 shots per hole were allowed, which was in honesty a Godsend for quite a few of us.

Having said that two grumpies managed to score three holes in one and one team actually scored three holes in one on the same hole, one after the other, such skill!

After negotiating, hills, dips, hollows, ramps, rough, alligators, water features (several plonks), cannons etc., totting up the scores, which varied from 44 (excellent and below par) to 80 (all promised not to tell his wife). Congrats to Bob Payne for winning, and scoring 3 holes in one. Bob becoming NSGOM Crazy Golf champion 2023.

The other 3 holes in one, were our chairman, who was almost sent off for trying to use his crutch instead of the provided club!

Off to the club house (the 19th hole) for a well earned pint and a wonderful Pie, Peas, Chips and Gravy lunch.

Real Ale Group

On Wednesday, 19th July, 16 of us met at 6.30pm to catch the tram to Nottingham Midland Train Station, then a bus down to Trent Bridge. Long live the travel passes!

We visited three public houses around the Trent Bridge area, the Trent Navigation, then the Embankment, then the Brewhouse. All sold reasonable beer, but the Brewhouse was both expensive and not well attended.

John Saunders had prepared two quizzes, and we split into two teams for a very hotly contested outcome, each team won one quiz and so onto tie breakers. After four drawn tie breakers, John announced a draw

We then caught the bus back up to Midland Station, and visited our final pub, the Vat and Fiddle, always an excellent choice to finish up in. Back through the station to catch the tram home to Hucknall.

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members especially new ones. Our indoor meeting place is Central Methodist Church on Baker Street: time 2pm – 4pm ish.

Kathy, Sue and I will be having a break during July and August when there are no meetings. The three of us will look forward to seeing members at Central Methodist Church on 20th September when Robert Mee will be with us with an illustrated talk about ‘Nottinghamshire Castles – Eleven Sites and more besides’. How many do you know of?

Fun with Languages

This group is exactly what the title says – FUN with different languages. It is NOT intended to be a high powered language course, but to learn the basics of some european languages to get by on holiday.

We meet the second Thursday of each month in John Godber Centre 10.30 am until 12 noon, usually in the Byron suite.

Our last meeting was learning about directions and places in a town in French, as this is the language we are studying at present.     

We also enjoyed some lunch, French style, kindly brought by Sue and John Tedstone to celebrate their Golden wedding on Bastille day. Congratulations to them.      

We shall meet in Augus,t on Thursday 10th, in JGC at 10.30 am – all welcome.
