National Trust

National Trust Group visit to Upton House near Banbury on Tuesday 21st April.

On a sunny if slightly chilly morning, the group left Hucknall Market Place for our journey down to Upton House.

Arriving just after 10.30 we had a brief talk given by the volunteers at Upton before collecting our timed entry tickets to the House.

The House was used as a country retreat for Viscount Bearsted’s family in the 1930’s before being gifted to the National Trust some years later. The House is now home to some of the best collections of paintings and porcelain in Britain with a total of over three thousand items on display.

The terraced gardens on the Estate were very colourful and proved very popular.

A number of lovely walks were available in the grounds along with a large restaurant, gift shop and second hand book shop and plant shop.

All in all a lovely venue.

In May we visit Croome on our third visit of the year.

Dance On

Our Dance On group is a hit!

After only 1 month our new interest group is thriving. We meet in different local venues to dance the evening away to Motown and soul music played by DJ’s using vinyl records and turntables. There are now 3 events per month.

We haven’t quite danced till dawn yet, but we’re getting close. It’s a very enjoyable evening out with a group of u3a members.

Vegetarian Cookery

Members at the March meeting watched a demonstration of a Red Pepper Dinner loaf and Glamorgan and Dijon Mustard spirals and tasted them after they were cooked. Again, there were no leftovers so no waste!

The next meeting will be on Monday 27 April at St Peter and St Paul’s hall on Ruffs Drive at 10.30 am.

Garden Group

The meeting in March was a talk on different perennial plants that can be used in pots as a change from annuals.

The meeting this month will be a trip to Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire. There will be no meeting in May as it is a Bank Holiday.

History Group

Our indoor meetings are always held at Central Methodist Church on Baker Street at the time of 2pm – 4pm (ish).  Usually it is £2 per person to cover the cost of a speaker and the hire of the room.

At the March meeting Robert Mee came to tell us about the History along the Erewash Trail.  He explained the trail was 30 miles as a round journey from Langley Mill to Long Eaton and back so in one hour we would have to move at 30mph to get the whole trail covered.  He thought that each town we passed could really have a talk of its own but he showed ‘then and now’ images as we went along.  Perhaps some of us could drive over to the river Erewash which isn’t very far away to see some of the sights he showed.

The April meeting is a visit to The National Arboretum by Vallances coach leaving Ogle Street in Hucknall at 10.30am on Wednesday 15th April.  We leave the Arboretum at 4pm.

For our May meeting we are back indoors to hear David Speed telling us about ‘Beauvale Priory – Between Two Worlds’.
