Water Rockets and Polystyrene Aeroplanes: A Day of Experimentation

The science group met at Bestwood Country Park for a hands-on exploration of flight and propulsion. A focus of the meeting was launching water rockets, an activity that proved both challenging and entertaining. Despite our enthusiasm and numerous attempts to launch even with the expertise of John Tedstone and John Berril we encountered a staggering 95% failure rate with water rocket launches.

They either failed to lift off or experienced technical difficulties, usually due to insufficient air pressure, this providing plenty of opportunities for laughter among the spectators.

In contrast, the session on polystyrene aeroplane flying was notably more successful. Members enjoyed constructing and testing their lightweight planes.

Some of them soared impressively across the open spaces of the park, others experienced an early descent.

Our efforts highlighted the unpredictable nature of scientific experimentation.  Overall, it was a memorable day, combining fun, frustration, and the thrill of discovery in a rural outdoor setting.

Our next meeting is on Friday 17th October at JGC 10am to 11.45am

We have a presentation from group member Dr Jolanta Adamczewska who spent many years specialising in the field of lubricants.

Most of us know they are substances designed to reduce friction between surfaces in mutual contact, which ultimately minimises heat generation and wear.

We will learn that they have many other uses and there are different types both natural and synthetic.

Following the break we have an activity currently in development.

Short Walks

Thursday 18th September was a dull wet day and with several members either put off by the weather or on holiday we only had five hardy walkers for a gentle undulating walk around Gedling Country Park.

The views from the raised viewing platforms are usually spectacular but today we could just see the tall spire of Gedling Church poking through the mist.

En route we met a wise owl and few people walking their dogs before we reached the café for a well-earned hot drink.

Next Month Thursday 16th October

The postponed visit for the guided tour of Bennerley Viaduct is confirmed, I have contacted the 2 volunteer guides (another!) Dave and Angie who will be leading the way.

Full details will be sent to group members a week before the walk.

Ukulele for Fun

From October, the Beginners and Improvers Ukulele Group will meet in the Byron Suite at the John Godber Centre. These sessions will take place on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month commencing at 10.00 am and running for 1 hour 30 minutes.

Sessions are open to ukulele players of all abilities and none. Complete beginners are always welcome. If anyone who does not have access to an instrument would like to give this a try, we do have an instrument available for you to borrow. Hucknall Library also operate a ukulele loan scheme.

Ukuleles are built in a variety of sizes the main ones being soprano, concert and tenor. Unlike the guitar which has more strings than players have fingers, a ukulele has four strings which makes it far easier to play.

It is not just George Formby classics that we play, in fact we play very few of those, but a vast selection of contemporary and classic songs. Even after a few basic lessons it is surprising just how many songs a beginner is able to play.

Our sessions are balanced to appeal to all levels, and although we are, in the finest traditions of the u3a, self taught, there is a wealth of experience and expertise available for any beginner to tap into.

So, if you have always wanted to play an instrument here is your opportunity. Please contact myself, John Pretty or Phil Attenborough using the website contact form or speak to either of us at our monthly members meeting.

Our next session is on Monday 13th October commencing at 10:00am in the John Godber Centre.

Gardening Group

On 1st September the group travelled to Yorkshire for the last trip of the year to Harlow Carr.

In spite of the weather we have had this year, the gardens were beautiful and still full of colour. The day was mostly dry, and we enjoyed wandering around the gardens and following the various trails, seeing just what a colourful season Autumn can be.

As usual Betty’s Tearoom and cafe was a very welcome stopping place and refreshed all who tried the delicious fare. This garden is a good place to visit to get ideas for your own plot, both in variety, colour and size of plants.

October’s meeting is at the JGC at 1.30 to 3.30 when we welcome Camilla Anderson who is speaking on Arts and Crafts and Edwardian gardens.

All are welcome as we are an open group.
