History Group

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members especially new ones. Our usual meeting place is Central Methodist Church: time 2pm – 4pm ish – on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are now in the Church Room which it is hoped will be much better for those members who have hearing problems. I have asked for us to continue with this booking.

At the September main meeting at the John Godber Centre, we will taking bookings for the trip to Derby Museum on October 19th costing £10. First we get a talk about Joseph Wright of Derby (famous artist) and afterwards a self guided tour of the museum. (Don’t forget to look for the ancient dug out boats which were a special item for me) Kath has decided to retire from helping with visits but we say a grateful thank you for her expertise over the years. Kathy will continue with the help of Sue Knight.

The autumn season will commence on September 21st 2022. Denis Hill who is a brilliant speaker is coming to tell us about ‘Victorian Housing Conditions’ which is a century or so before most of the bureaucracy and health and safety rules came into being. It would no doubt cover the lifetimes of our great grandparents.

Kathy and Sue will again be taking bookings, just in case you missed the main meeting, for the trip to Derby Museum costing £10.

Bye for now – Maureen

Science

Following our summer sunshine break we meet again on Friday 16th September at 10.00 am to 11.45 am at the usual venue the Portland Room at John Godber Centre.

John Tedstone has been busy putting together a presentation about:

This will be followed by a group activity to consider a Developer’s and an opposing NIMBY’s perspective based around the history of the proposed River Severn Barrage. The opposing groups will consider reasons why:

We should build the Barrage or stop the Barrage being built?

If we have time we will finish by looking at some of the most recent eye-catching images in science from around the world.

New Groups – Bridge for Beginners/Wine Group 3

We have some interest in these two new groups, so I’m advertising them further.

The Bridge Group will be for Beginners with the hope that I can persuade a u3a member to provide a little tuition to get us going.

We already have a leader for Wine Group 3.

I have arranged with Melvyn (our Chairman) to hold a ‘Breakout Meeting’ on Wednesday 14th September at 3:30 p.m., to discuss how these two new groups will get going. We will meet in the Bar Area, off the main hall (where you collect your tea from), after the main meeting has finished.

Please let me know if you would like to come along to find out more. All your ideas will be welcome!! Please Email me on – coordinator@hucknallu3a.org.uk

Mid-length Walking Group

On a warm and humid 15th August, our intrepid group set off from Zouch for a very pleasant walk alongside the River Soar. This is not the Ashby-de-la-Zouch that most of us will probably know of, but in fact quite near Kegworth, an area that we have not often visited for our monthly walks.

This walk was postponed from last month, because of the extreme heat. As we walked, it did look as though we might actually get wet, but in the event we stayed dry! There were quite a few narrow boats out and about on the river. Going northwards, the Soar joins the River Trent at Trent lock, and we left the riverbank near Kegworth to return via very dry fields and finally Sutton Bonnington village.

A pleasant and interesting walk, with thanks to Steve and Ann Lawrence for organizing this walk.

Our next walk will be on Monday, 19th September, 2022.
