Absolutely fabulous! The History Group’s first visit this year was to Nottingham University to hear a talk called “The Making of Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum” from Dr. Paul Roberts the Senior Roman Curator of the new exhibition at the British Museum in London. How the time flew. We were taken on a tour of the buildings people lived in, saw how they decorated their homes, discovered what people ate, where they slept, and even where they went to the loo – in the kitchen! Paul was an amazing speaker, amusing, entertaining and held the audience enthralled. He was arguably the best speaker any of us had heard. Afterwards we were allowed to handle Roman artifacts from Margidunum a Nottinghamshire Roman site in the archaeology museum and then called in for a coffee and chat in the cafe. A superb afternoon.
A special ‘thank you’ to Vivien Ackroyd for setting this up for the members.
Next time on 15th May members are visiting Papplewick Hall.
