Reading Group

For November we read “The Child” by Fiona Burton, which was the librarian’s choice. We all enjoyed this story which had a twist at the end.

We are planning our 2022 programme and we like to have a different genre of book each month; so once again I would be pleased to hear of any which you might like to recommend. The Library organised our December book which was a futuristic one; “How to Stop Time” is about Tom Hazard who looks like your average forty-something but actually has a rare condition that makes him age slower than the average human. So, he’s around four hundred years old!

We have decided not to hold a January Reading Group session but will share on line our comments on books we have read. In February we will be discussing “any book you read at school/college etc” which gives scope for a wide variety of books.

Flower Arranging Group

Firstly please remember I am a terrified amateur at flower arranging, but I am willing to give it a go with your help.

For February 7th, 2022, 1.30 – 3.30pm please bring:-
A container – (smallish) with some oasis sticking out about 2 inches above the rim.
Spring flowers – I usually buy the pots of spring bulbs and cut the flowers off (hard I know) but then I pop the bulbs in the garden in the hope that Chardonnay the squirrel leaves a few to flower next year).
Some foliage – that will enhance the flowers such as box, privet, cyclamen leaves.
Some moss – if you have it.

Equipment
Sharp scissors or secateurs
Bag for rubbish
Something to cover the table – I have used a cut up black bag.

At the first meeting we can discuss what we want to get out of the group as I don’t want it to be a group where people just watch. I want people to go away with a creation they are proud of. Transport of creations can be arrange in needed.

Some of the thoughts I have had are:-
a) a trip to Flora Media to have a professional flower arrange show us how it is done.
b) a trip to a cathedral to see a flower festival (C19 willing)

I am sure you will be able to come up with other ideas. Please feel free to contact me, Siobhan, if you need some help with the oasis or anything else on flowers@hucknallu3a.org.uk

Choir

Our notification requesting assistance with the choir is now out there in the NG15 magazine. Our copy hasn’t arrived yet, but a choir member has received hers and has confirmed that the advertisement has been included. You can check it for yourself if you can find it! It will be small, they were willing to spare me only an eighth of a page, but it was free, so I was happy to accept. The run-up to Christmas, when everyone is busy, isn’t the best time to ask for help, but someone may have time on their hands and be pleased to spend it with us. Volunteers may be more receptive during the quiet time at the beginning of the year, but having missed the August issue, this is what we were offered, and I didn’t think we should wait a further three months (I think it’s a quarterly magazine). Someone may be available and get in touch now, but if we don’t get a response we must hope that the request is seen in one of the publications later, as I have run out of ideas for seeking help!

If you hear of anyone with the necessary skills who’d enjoy spending a few hours a month guiding our group, please point them in my direction.

As the choir is unable to sing this greeting, I’ll pass on our good wishes. 🎵 ‘We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year’🎶 and to all choir members too, ‘Best wishes for a Happy and Peaceful Christmas’.
