Reading Group

We held a Reading Group session in May when we discussed the set book “Away With The Penguins” by Hazel Prior. This was a delightful story with a bonus of little sidebar information about adele penquins presented in an engaging way.

The set book for June was “Your Neighbour’s Wife” by Tony Parsons with lots of twists and turns.

The set book for July will be “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. I could not believe it when the library told me there were only two copies of this book in the whole of Nottinghamshire libraries and these were for “easy readers” – so luckily those of us who already had our own copies will re-read them and then lend them to the rest of the group.

Table Tennis Group

Dusting off skills almost learned by members several decades ago, the new table tennis group began in April. With expert coaching for those who can play and even better coaching for the most of us who can’t, the group meets at United Reform Church, off Farleys Lane, 2:30 to 4:30pm every Wednesday (except monthly meeting day). Weapons provided, just bring refreshments.

Reading Group

We held a normal Reading Group session in March when we discussed one of a selection of “pot luck” books from the Library (books retrieved from their “just booked back in” trolley); unfortunately they did not go down too well so we have a Crime Café book for discussion at the April Reading Group – a thriller, “The Carrier” by Sophie Hannah.

Then the set book for May will be “Away With The Penguins” by Hazel Prior.

Reading Group

We had to cancel February’s session due to my having been in contact with positive Covid family members. We had read a variety of “books you read as a child or at school/college” which included mostly classics such as Little Women (Louisa M. Alcott), King Solomon’s Mine (Rider Haggard), Pride & Prejudice (Jane Austen) and Lord of the Flies (William Goulding).

We will hold a normal Reading Group session in March when we will be discussing one of a selection of “pot luck” books from the Library (books retrieved from their “just booked back in” trolley); thanks to the help of the library staff.

The set book for the following month will be a thriller, The Carrier by Sophie Hannah.

Reading Group

We decided not to hold a January Reading Group session but again shared on line our comments on books we had read.

In February we will hold a normal Reading Group session when we will be discussing “any book you read at school/college etc” which gives scope for a wide variety of books.
