Reading Group

In September we discussed a book set in modern Glasgow “Shuggie Bain” by Douglas Stuart. I can’t say that we “enjoyed” this book due to the harrowing tale of life for a young lad in the Glasgow slums.

The librarian is being very helpful in finding books for us; we often follow the Library’s Crime Café by reading their monthly set murder mystery book. Next month’s Reading Group book is “A Matter of Murder” by Ann Granger.

The set book for August discussion was “Dissolution” by C.J.Sansom which was a murder mystery set in the times of the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. It really brought the sights, sounds and smells of the times to mind!

In September we shall be discussing a book set in modern Glasgow “Shuggie Bain” by Douglas Stuart.

New Groups – Bridge for Beginners/Wine Group 3

We have some interest in these two new groups, so I’m advertising them further.

The Bridge Group will be for Beginners with the hope that I can persuade a u3a member to provide a little tuition to get us going.

We already have a leader for Wine Group 3.

I have arranged with Melvyn (our Chairman) to hold a ‘Breakout Meeting’ on Wednesday 14th September at 3:30 p.m., to discuss how these two new groups will get going. We will meet in the Bar Area, off the main hall (where you collect your tea from), after the main meeting has finished.

Please let me know if you would like to come along to find out more. All your ideas will be welcome!! Please Email me on – coordinator@hucknallu3a.org.uk

The set book for July discussion was “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte which was hard going in parts due to the dialect but most still enjoyed it.

In August we shall be discussing a book from a fairly new author – “A Trick of the Light” by Ali Carter.

u3a Outdoor Activities

On Saturday, 21st May, 2022 Hucknall and District u3a took part in a Rotary Club activity on Hucknall Market Place, open from 10am to 3pm.

Over twenty local activity groups took part and it was very well attended by the Hucknall public.
Quite a few folk took an interest in our display, we had several interested in joining, and one guy actually signed up and paid his enrolment fees.

Unfortunately, our similar event on Saturday, 18th June, on Titchfield Park to mark 100 years since it’s opening, organised by Ashfield Council didn’t go ahead, due to several problems with the council not acknowledging our entry form, not sending an invoice and then finally after much chasing, only a couple of days prior to the event, requesting insurance details, risk assessments, car details etc., all that should have been requested weeks before. A decision was therefore made not to attend. Thanks for those organising and who offered to help.

As it happens Saturday was very wet.
