Short Walks

Our October walk was along the River Trent from Stoke Bardolph to the Radcliffe viaducts and the Netherfield Lagoons. The lagoons are a wildlife haven for a variety of birds. The muddy edges are especially attractive to waders and roosting gulls and terns.

The group photograph was taken on a bright sunny day in front of one of the 28 brick arches of the railway bridge that spans the river.

Thursday 21st November Walk

To continue the river theme this month we will follow part of the River Leen.

The plan is a linear walk along the Leen Valley Way starting from Wilkinson Street tram stop to the Moor Bridge tram stop.

The distance is about 4 miles on decent paths with no stiles.

Meet at the Hucknall tram at 9.30am to validate bus passes or to buy a ticket.

We will then board the first tram that leaves after 9.30am

Short Walks

Our walk on 19th September started from the car park in Newstead Village which is near the Annesley and Newstead Country Park.

We walked between the lakes in the park to eventually reach the point where the River Leen flows into the Newstead Abbey top lake. We paused by the Folly Fort which is midway down the lake.

Several intrepid walkers climbed the stone steps onto the ramparts to gain excellent views of the Abbey grounds and buildings.

The next stop was the café for a short drinks break before we returned by the minor road, pausing by the waterfall for a group photo on our way back to the car park.

17th October Walk

We are starting from the public car park opposite the Ferry Boat in Stoke Bardolph.

The walk is along the River Trent to the weir and then onto Netherfield Lagoons.

It is an easy route with no stiles. Details will be sent out to group members.

Short Walks

On a bright sunny day our August walk was led by Kevin Varey

We set off from the Parfitt Lane Playground car park in Farnsfield onto undulating footpaths across several acres of scenic agricultural land.

Towards the end of the route we were met by some friendly rare breed sheep.

Once back at the car park, anxious to keep up a u3a tradition, some of us made a visit to the nearby Woodberry Teahouse and Café.

Thanks to Kevin and all the walkers.

September 19th Walk

This month we are starting from the Newstead Village car park on a circular route across the country park towards the Abbey top lake, with an opportunity to climb up the steps on the ‘fort’ as we walk along the lakeside towards the toilets and café before returning.

There are no stiles or steep ascents or descents en route.

Details will be sent to all group members nearer the 19th

Short Walks

Our meeting point for the July walk was the parking lay-by near Greasley Church.

It was a warm, sunny day and a busy lay-by as Gedling Ramblers were also assembling to start their walk from there at 10am.

Our walk took us across the field footpath from the church towards Moorgreen, skirting Colliers Wood before taking the footpath through the Industrial Estate.

This is on the site that was once Moorgreen Colliery and Mining Training Centre.

The photograph shows the centre in the 1970s.

The walk continued to Lower Beauvale followed by a steep ascent to Beauvale passing both the Greasley Beauvale Primary School (where DH Lawrence was a pupil) and then the new 2011 school before reaching Newthorpe and finally back to Greasley. The original school site became a Listed Building in 2008.

Our next walk is on Thursday August 15th starting from Farnsfield.

Short Walks

Our June walk started at Linby Village.

The route was across the meadow to Papplewick, into Moor Pond Woods following the footpaths by the River Leen to Grange Farm and Grange Mill.

Some of us could remember that once upon a time this used to be the location of Papplewick Lido. This was built on the site of the former Papplewick Grange, the home of Nottingham solicitor Jesse Hind, which was pulled down in 1932. The lido itself was built in the mid 1930s and demolished in 1995, with houses now built on the site.

Our return route took us via Papplewick Dam and the fishing pond back to Linby where we made good use of the facilities at Brooke farm.

July Walk

On Thursday 18th July we are meeting at the large lay-by car park at Greasley Church. Church Road Greasley NG16 2AB

Meet at 9.45am for a 10.00am start
