Short Walks

In August we set off from the canal side car park at Whatstandwell for a steady uphill climb and over the museum tram tracks to the Regimental Memorial above Crich.
This is a Mercian Regiment War Memorial dedicated to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Mercian Regiment and its antecedents; the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters and the Sherwood Foresters.
We had a short lunch break to admire the view before the starting the downhill trek back to the start.

Full marks for determination must go to Albert Briggs making his comeback to the group ably supported by Carol and Carole!
Thanks to Roy Brown for organising and guiding the route- which was our first venture into Derbyshire since before ‘lockdown’.

Next Month: The walk is on Thursday September 16th, 2021
The meeting point: The car park at Colliers Wood, Moorgreen
Full details will be posted nearer the time.

October 21st, 2021: I will be walking but in the Lake District. If you can volunteer to lead the walk in October please let me know.

Our 15th July walk was a 4.6 miles predominantly riverside route initially along the River Trent from Ferry Farm before following the Dover Beck to Hoveringham Mill. This dates from 1778 and was a corn mill driven by the flow of the Dover Beck. We then followed footpaths looping back towards Hoveringham village via the cricket pitch which made a convenient drinks stop.

Top walker Ken Carlin still leading the way at 90 plus

Our next Walk is on Thursday August 19th,2021 which is our annual summer walk in the Peak District. 4.6 miles starting from Whatstandswell, details tbc

We are pleased to be up and running once more (actually it’s more like a gentle stroll). On May 20th, eighteen members enjoyed a 4 mile ramble from Lowdham mainly on footpaths with good views. We also walked by the building in the photograph the Grade II listed Lowdham Mill on the Doverbeck River.

Unfortunately my photograph of the group was way out of focus, apologies for that.

We are pleased to welcome new members to the short walks: Ken Carlin, Pauline Archer and Gary and Tina Holmes.

The next walk is on Thursday June 18th, 2021 – venue to be confirmed.

Short Walk – 20th May, 2021

Many of us have been completing a lot of local walks so, for a change of scenery for our first short walk of 2021, we are starting from the car park behind Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham, Nottingham NG14 7BF.

The entrance is opposite The Ship Inn – please park at the rear of the car park

Meet at 9.45am for a 10.00 am start.

The walk is approximately four miles with one early uphill which provides good views followed by some downhill before walking by the Dover Beck and Lowdham Mill and back via the churchyard. It is basically all footpaths with one short quiet road section.

Fourteen members took part in our walk this month. The route was researched and led by Greg Umney who was well prepared with his anti viral spray gun and jumbo sized bottle of hand sanitiser.

The walk was an undulating 4 miles from Blidworth on footpaths heading towards Ravenshead from where we turned into the woods down to Friar Tuck’s Well before making a loop back to our starting point. The route included lots of kissing gates which received a liberal dose of spray from Greg’s gun before we went through them. En route we also met a large number of friendly horses who made a bee line for Roy Brown who was generously offering to feed them mints.

November
Now the bad news: the whole of Nottinghamshire is now in Tier 3. Unfortunately the limitations this imposes mean, that for now, the walks are suspended. We have future walks planned and they will restart as soon as we can.
