Real Ale Group

Fourteen of us enjoyed an evening in Nottingham on 18th November, 2021 visiting The Crafty Crow, The Roundhouse, The Trip to Jerusalem (a local, David, demonstrating how easy the hook and horn game is, which none of us could do), finishing off at The Royal Children where we were entertained by a group with a variety of singers, a most enjoyable night.

It was decided to return to Nottingham for our final night out of 2021 on Thurday, 16th December, by again meeting at the tram station to catch the 6.30 pm tram and to visit the Derby Road-Canning Circus area public houses.

On Thursday 10th October, a few of us went to the Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival organised by CAMRA, held this year at Notts Cricket Ground, quite a bit to travel.

I think it is fair to say that it was a very reduced affair compared to the last two years at the Motorpoint or indeed Nottingham Castle in previous years. However, there was a good if reduced selection of beers and cider on offer, allegedly 600 varieties, so we still had plenty of choice and a good time was had by all.

We ended up at the Bibiana Indian Restaurant, in Hucknall, to round off a very enjoyable evening.

Next month we will be going to Nottingham to sample the hostelries around Nottingham Castle, meeting at the Crafty Crow at 7.15pm on Thursday 18th November, or meeting at Hucknall Tram station just before 6.30pm to catch that tram.

Time to get started again, you will be aware that we are having our normal u3a monthly meeting at 2.00 pm on Wednesday, 8th September, 2021 at the John Godber Centre, when we will be able to have a chat about our future Real Ale group outings, so please come with some ideas.

To kick off, we will be having our first Real Ale get-together (in 18 months) on Wednesday, 15th September, meeting at Wetherspoon’s Pilgrim Oak, in Hucknall at 7.00 pm, moving on as appropriate. Hoping to see as many as possible.

Our second outing will be to the renowned Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival, which is being held at the cricket ground this year. We will be going on Thursday, 14th October, meeting at the tram station at 3.30 pm. Travel by tram to Midland Station, then bus to Trent Bridge, so bring your tram/bus pass.

The cost this year is £10, (£20 on Friday & Saturday) which includes 9 beer tokens. However, no glasses this year, as they will be on loan using previous years’ glasses. Not sure if we get any extra if in CAMRA, but bring your membership card in case. You will need to purchase your ticket beforehand to ensure entrance. Again, hoping as many as possible can make it.
