February Long Walk

Following on from our talk at the monthly meeting in January, which I think everyone enjoyed and found very interesting, I decided that we should walk around Newstead and Annesley Country Park and see for ourselves. So with that in mind we walked over the Misk Hills and on to Annesley Forest, around the country park and down the old disused railway line to Linby, back through Dobbs Park and over the Misk Hills to  a welcome pint in the Nabb Inn.  The walk was 9.99 miles and the conditions were good for the time of year.

We are a friendly group and would welcome new members, we normally walk between 8-9 miles, I would like to dispel the myth that this group is the equivalent to an S.A.S training march, we walk at the same pace as the Mid-Walking group, just a little further. We have a Coffee break and a lunch break we always have a back marker so no one can get left behind, if any one needs a break then that’s fine and if there is anything interesting or someone wants to take a photo that’s fine as well.#

I look forward to seeing you all!

January Long Walk

Despite what the weather could throw at us, injury and illness and also people pulling out for the very muddy conditions, four intrepid souls still managed to start from the Nabb Inn in Hucknall for the January Long Walk.

We walked through Eelhole Wood, Narrow Lane and across the fields to Greasley then by the side of Moorgreen Reservoir and along Felley Mill Lane through the plantations and back over the Misk hills for a well earned pint in the Nabb Inn.

It was quite wet and muddy, as you would expect at this time of year, but it didn’t dampen our enthusiasm, which is the main thing. I look forward to seeing all my fellow walkers in the new year, and remember, we still have room for anyone interested in a good walk and scintillating conversation.

December Long Walk

Thank you to everyone who turned up for the walk on 6th December. Although I went a little wrong we managed to get back on course and everybody said how much they had enjoyed the walk. It was a rather gloomy day but everyone soon got talking which jollied us all along.

We started at Teversal Visitors Centre, where there was free parking, cafe and toilets, and walked along good paths to Hardwick Hall, had lunch and carried on through the grounds and down the Rowthorne Trail. It was very pleasant but would have been even better had we had the sharp frost and sunny weather we had a couple of days later as the colours this time of year are beautiful.

Thanks again to everyone who came, we still have room for more members so don’t put it off and get in touch with me.

November Long Walk

For our November walk we were kindly given permission to park at The Griffin’s Head Papplewick. Our route was along Main Street to Blidworth Waye where we joined the Robin Hood Way to Ravenshead.

We took a short coffee break in Ravenshead before continuing onto and along Little Rickets Lane towards Larch Farm. The next stage was a footpath off Kirkby Road which led to Newstead Abbey and we all were relieved to get to the cafe and toilets because by that stage we had covered 7 miles.

After taking a late lunch we continued through the grounds towards Papplewick appreciating the autumn colours along the way. 9.3 miles later, we arrived back at the Griffin’s Head where many of us enjoyed a welcome drink.

Long Walks Group

Thanks to everyone who attended the 4th October walk, which was through the picturesque village of Bothamsall along the River Maun then through Conjure Alders, an ancient wood, and on along the River Meden.

We then had our lunch at the side of the Meden sitting on top of Robin Hood’s cave, overlooking very nice views of the surrounding countryside. We then walked through Boughton Brakes, a wood belonging to the National Trust and worked our way back to the start through Walesby and over the open countryside.

It was a walk of around 9 miles, but was very flat and was enjoyed by all, including the new members. The weather managed to hold off until the end of the walk, which made it a nice day for walking, though a little breezy toward the end. On the way home we called in at the White Post for a well deserved pint of Timothy Taylors.

The group is open to new members who are always welcome.
