The visit to Ashby de la Zouche town and Museum on June 21st. was just brilliant. Weather super even touching a bit too warm at times; plenty of places with good food to eat, a town market to browse and St. Helen’s Church was really interesting. Did you follow the ‘mouse’ trail and did you try out the finger pillory? Our visit ended with a visit to the museum which was am-a-zing. Usually it closes on Wednesday afternoon but the staff were there to welcome us for a private viewing with ephemera and artefacts brought out of storage specifically for us. What can I say? Just fab-u-lous. Ashby is a town worth visiting. I think we all enjoyed the trip.

The most traumatic year in English history was what Mike Kelly was telling us about on May 17th.  Of course history was written by the Normans who were victorious and apparently bent the facts to fit their story including ethnic cleansing of the Saxon/Viking people especially those living in the north.

Kathy and Sue will be at the main meeting on June 14th to take bookings for our visit to Ashby de la Zouch town and Museum on June 21st.

What did you think to Bassetlaw Museum at Retford if you went on the coach?  I thought it was just brilliant so many memories brought back to life from mothers and grandmothers. The Pilgrim Fathers exhibition was very good and it was interesting to see people from the original tribe who helped the settlers who had come over the ocean and built a wetu in the garden. Retford itself was a lovely place to walk around with plenty of cafés and seats for a rest when needed. The journey was great as well – I will remember the bluebells as we passed Clumber Park.

Wednesday May 17th 2pm is the date and time for the meeting at Central Methodist Church when Mike Kelly will be with us. He will tell us about ‘The Fall of Saxon England, Christmas Day 1065 to Christmas Day 1066’ which is the most traumatic year in English history.

Kathy and Sue will be at the main meeting on May 10th to take bookings for our Visit to Ashby de la Zouch Museum on June 21st.
