Litter Picking

During July 19 bags of rubbish have been collected by members of the Litter Picking group. The main grot spots continue to be all sections of the bypass as well as the Common Lane area but if anyone knows of another area where there appears to be a large amount of litter, please let me know and we will deal with it.

Should anyone wish to join our litter picking group please contact me as per the interest group details at the end of the newsletter. A tabard and equipment will be provided.

Growing Old Disgracefully

July 26th saw 16 brave ladies follow in the footsteps of the Not So Grumpy Old Men with a day at The Adrenaline Jungle.

We had a great day playing Sterling Moss and Robin Hood. One lady managed a bull’s eye in the archery, the others not so fortunate, some hitting the backdrop sheet, a little more practice is needed there, I think!

The blindfold driving was full of drama, with the driver being reliant on their team to direct them using alternate words for right and left, whilst driving on winding forest pathways and avoiding slalom poles, trees, bushes ditches, etc. Great fun.

The event was finished off in the usual U3A way with food at the White Post.

Short Walks

Our meeting point for the July walk was the parking lay-by near Greasley Church.

It was a warm, sunny day and a busy lay-by as Gedling Ramblers were also assembling to start their walk from there at 10am.

Our walk took us across the field footpath from the church towards Moorgreen, skirting Colliers Wood before taking the footpath through the Industrial Estate.

This is on the site that was once Moorgreen Colliery and Mining Training Centre.

The photograph shows the centre in the 1970s.

The walk continued to Lower Beauvale followed by a steep ascent to Beauvale passing both the Greasley Beauvale Primary School (where DH Lawrence was a pupil) and then the new 2011 school before reaching Newthorpe and finally back to Greasley. The original school site became a Listed Building in 2008.

Our next walk is on Thursday August 15th starting from Farnsfield.

Science Group

At our July meeting members of the group arrived with their homework which was to create an image using an early photographic technique called Cyanotype.

The image is formed on light sensitive thin card and the results varied due to differing qualities of the cards purchased for the activity.

More of the better quality was made available at the meeting for members to try again and some of the results are shown below.

Creating more images was only part of a practical session to discover things about magnets, mirrors, lenses, gyroscopes and diffraction spectrum by looking through diffraction spectacles.

We finished with an end of term quiz won by the ‘Berrill Catering’ team.

There is no meeting in August our next meeting is on Friday 20th September.

Invitation from the Science Group

An opportunity for all members: A presentation about aspects of Dementia

Dementia is a syndrome of brain decline that affects memory, thinking, language, mood and behaviour.

Different types of dementia can affect people differently, and everyone will experience symptoms in their own way.

Many of us have experienced it to some degree through its effect on family and friends.

This is an open invitation to come along to  the Science group meeting on Friday 20th September from 10am to approx 11.15am in the main hall at JGC.

We are delighted to host a presentation from Dr Alison Cowley and Dr Collins about their current research and clinical work around aspects of Dementia.
