Discussion Group

The topics for discussion on Monday, 6th November, were met with the following results.

1. Children talking. This topic referred to the constant use by some young people of ‘I-Pads’ and other technologies which could be considered good and bad. It was agreed that communication as a face to face interaction is better and should be encouraged where and whenever possible

2.Concrete in buildings ie schools and hospitals. In discussion this was felt to be a recurring problem. Replace and or repair would be costly with an underlying question of who would provide the finances.

3. Do we feel safe in our homes? Main points raised were those of needful attention to measures for safety, eg. always keeping doors locked. It was pointed out due to heresay and experience the Police do not prioritise break ins and similar crimes.

4. The BBC It was pointed out that programmes particularly those referring to ‘the weather’ seem to be biased and conflicting with other channels. This led some members to see the company as unreliable and doubt as to the reliability of any TV companies.

5. Artificial grass. The members had differing opinions of the use of this feature. Is it environmentally good or not? We learnt it has some drawbacks – moss grows on it.

6. ‘Speeding’ This is a subject to be carried over to our next meeting in February 2024.

Short Walks

In November we finally managed the walk from Gravelly Hollow through Watchwood Woods towards Calverton across the Calverton Colliery reclaimed land. We made a couple of diversions off the intended route to avoid too much mud.

In December it’s a local walk starting and finishing at Brooke Farm cafe Linby.

Note the date and change of day to Wednesday, 20th December for a  9.45am meet.

Science

In November Ann and Ian Murray presented an illustrated talk about Volcanoes. They explained that a volcano is a rupture in the crust of the Earth, that allows hot lavavolcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface.

On Earth, volcanoes are most often found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging and most are found underwater. It is a topical theme as there are current concerns about the situation in Iceland.

They then described their visit to Pompeii where the destructive effect of the eruption of Vesuvius had on that city is well preserved.

After the break John Tedstone described a visit to W.Winters of Derby the oldest continuously working photographers in the UK. It is still a photographer’s studio and a heritage centre.

Medium Walks

Our last walk of 2023 took place yesterday, at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, near Retford. The weather was remarkably good for November, and this was an interesting walk to end the year. Thanks to Steve and Anne Lawrence for organising this walk. The photo shows us near one of the lakes within the reserve, slightly muddy by this stage of the walk.

Our first walk of 2024 will be a City walk and Photo Quiz in January, with lunch afterwards as an added incentive.

More details in the New Year. We hope that new members will continue to join us, but in the meantime, if you no longer want to be a member of the Group, just let me know via the website.
