National Trust Updates

I have now managed to map out our venues for 2022, subject to any future Covid restrictions. Our full list of visits are set out below.

Wednesday March 23rd Nostell Priory near Wakefield. Coach Travel £8.50 pp
Thursday April 28th Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire. Coach Travel £7.50 pp
Tuesday May 17thCanon’s Abbey in Northants
Monday June 13th Packwood House in Warwickshire
Wednesday July 20th W6addesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire
Thursday August 11th Nunnington Hall 0in Yorkshire
Tuesday September 13th Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire
Wednesday October 10th Gunby Estate in Lincolnshire

Please note that with increased fuel costs, an increase in driver wages and the cost of spare parts, prices will have to be slightly higher than last year but June at JB Tours has kept these to a minimum for us.

Most visits will depart from the bus stop on Hucknall Market place at 9.30 am and return from the venue at 4.00pm. The TWO EXCEPTIONS to this will be the visits to Waddesdon Manor and Gunby Hall when we will leave at 8.30 am to allow for the longer journeys.

To be fair to everyone I will accept bookings by email OR telephone one calendar month before each visit. So for Nostell Priory that will be on February 23rd and for Kedleston Hall on March 28th onwards. Cheques payable to Hucknall and District u3a can be sent to my home address at 3 Roughs Wood Lane, Hucknall, Notts.NG15 6SH.

Finally just to remind members that once you have paid for coach seats if you are subsequently unable to attend then it becomes your responsibility to sell your seat to another member. If I have a waiting list then I will of course try to help out. I look forward to a more normal set of visits this year!!!

Litter Picking Group

Does anyone know of anybody who has lost a crutch? This was one of the weird finds recently on a litter pick around the Butlers Hill tram stop area. Maybe someone got off the tram and was miraculously cured so didn’t need their crutch anymore and decided to dump it in the bushes!

The final total number of bags of rubbish collected by the litter picking group for 2021 was 159 and already 57 bags of rubbish have been collected this year which is a commendable effort by the group and an absolute disgrace that litter louts deem it acceptable to drop litter.

Finally, a big thank you and farewell to litter pickers Carol and Dave Insley who are moving to pastures new.

    History Group

The History Group always welcomes all U3A members. Our usual meeting place is Central Methodist Church: time 2pm – 4pm ish. Our next meeting is on February 16th when Malcolm Darroch is coming to talk to us about ‘When the Balloon Went Up’. He says it is a fascinating story.

For the benefit of other members perhaps I should say the History Group have started on a High Street project of their own by members writing down the shops and businesses they remember. First we looked at the one done in combination with Hucknall Heritage Society and Holgate School for the 1930s but we are aiming to bring the dates nearer our own time. It might take a few months but we are hoping to have something to show later in the year.

I asked if anyone had tried accessing the 1921 Census. The answer was no (including myself) but I attended a zoom meeting a few days ago about the census and made a few notes. It will be a couple of weeks or so before you read this account in our newsletter. The National Archives chose findmypast for the digitisation project. The Census was originally planned to take place on Sunday April 25th but was not actually taken until 19th June. The paperwork people filled in was not changed to the new date meaning it still listed 25th April. Enumerators numbering 38,000 took out the forms to 8,739,197 families; making 38 million records. The resulting forms were bound into 30,000 volumes covering 1.5 kilometres of shelving. It took many people 3 years of work, over thousands of hours, to digitise and transcribe the records; taking 18 million digital images.

I try to make sure we have a variety of topics and visits to suit different history based subjects but if you have heard a speaker or been to a venue you think suitable please let me know. A full list of meeting dates for the group with details of speakers and visits is available below and copies can be picked up at meetings.

    Bye for now, Maureen

    Short Walks Group

Firstly I do apologise for the fact that the planned January walk had to be cancelled at short notice. However the same route is back on for February 17th, 2022.

Meet at Titchfield Park car park near the junction with Caddaw Avenue at 9.45 am for a 10.00 am start.

Titchfield Park, Park Drive Hucknall NG15 7LU

The walk is approximately 4 miles and visits Bulwell Hall before proceeding to Bestwood Lakes Country Park and returns through Butlers Hill. We will take a short break at the Forge Mill (fairly new) tea rooms for a drink stop. Bring your own or buy one at the cafe.

If the car park is busy there is ample parking nearby on Park Drive.
