Long Walks

Our walk this month was to the Peak District on 2nd July and was led by Carol Green. We walked 7.96 miles over good paths; it was pleasant for walking as the weather behaved itself and was warm, without being uncomfortable.

It was a nice walk with stunning scenery; we walked through Stoney Middleton and Eyam, two beautiful old English villages. Eyam became famous by shutting itself off because of an outbreak of plague, 400 years ago. There are plaques outside each of the cottages telling who lived there at that time and what happened to them, which we took time to read. We finished off by having a cup of tea and cake at a pleasant tea shop in Eyam where we were able to sit outside as the Sun had shown itself.

Water Colour Group

On Monday 1st July a member of the group demonstrated using a cut up credit card to paint with. We were intrigued with the process and most of the group attempted to paint a picture in the same way, it was very successful. A few were displayed and Patrick, our tutor, was very impressed. I’m sure we shall be using this method a lot in the future.

This year we have been unable to arrange our usual August outside session in time. It has been suggested that instead we use our own gardens or photograph unusual buildings around Hucknall to paint.

We meet again on 2nd September 2024.

In November 2024 it has been arranged with the Hucknall Library to display some of the marvellous paintings produced by the group.

Here are the dates remaining in 2024

7th October, 4th November – No December meeting.

Dates for 2025

6th January, 3rd February, 3rd March, 7th April, 12th May, 9th June,7th July, No August meeting (will hopefully arrange an outdoor session) 1st September, 6th October, 3rd November.

Vegetarian Cookery

There were fewer members at last month’s meeting due to holidays and prior commitments, but we all enjoyed a sociable time chatting and eating the cooked recipes.

A big thank you to those who helped, as my two beautiful assistants were both on holiday, I would have struggled without you! It all makes for a very friendly and sociable group.

Next meeting will be on Monday 22nd July at 10.30 am.

We still have a few spaces left in the group so if anyone would like to join us, please contact me.

Gardening Group

Last month, members enjoyed a fantastic romp of a talk from Lizzie Impey. Lizzie, from Ravenshead, gave an insight into the history of flower growing and picking for many different events. She explained her own route into the business and how she now runs her own Priory Wood Flowers selling and delivering locally grown blooms, travelling very few miles and producing fragrant seasonal bouquets. She enthused us all with her excitement and enthusiasm.

On 16 July the group are taking a trip to East Riddlesden Hall in Yorkshire. We have already filled one coach and are taking names for a second. If anyone would like to join us, see us at the main u3a meeting in July. The cost is £15 for National Trust members and £21.50 for non-members.

On 20 August we are going to David Austin Roses and will be taking names for this trip at the main meetings in July and August.

As the weather is finally beginning to warm up, take the opportunity to get out and enjoy your plots.

Singalong

At our June Singalong we enjoyed songs from various Shows and Films, including South Pacific, Oklahoma and Evita.

Our next meeting in July has the theme of “Places.”

Everyone welcome.
