Hucknall u3a was formed in 2008 as part of the wider u3a movement. The founders of the wider movement in 1982 envisaged a collaborative approach with people learning from each other. The u3a movement was to be self-funded, with members not working towards qualifications but learning purely for pleasure. There would be no distinction between the learners and the teachers – everyone could take a turn at being both if they wished.
The heart of any u3a branch is its activity and interest groups . Currently we have about 50 such groups, ranging from walking and cycling to craft and discussion groups. These are led by volunteer Group Leaders who organise activities, meetings or instruction on a particular subject area or activity. The frequency of meetings all depends on the activity and the Group Leader.
Meetings are held in a variety of places from people’s homes to the John Godber Centre, a couple of local churches, the leisure centre or the great outdoors.
We also have at least four different social events organised throughout the year by our active social sub-committee.
