Visit to the Tram Control Room

On a wet and windy Wednesday in January some of the Pot Luck group along with a few other U3a members visited the Tram Control Room at Wilkinson Street. What an eye opener! We were met in reception by Trevor and taken to the meeting room, pausing en-route to look down upon trams being serviced/repaired in the workshops. We were given tea/coffee then shown a brief film shown in time lapse of the QMC and Station bridges being put in place. Amazing! This was followed by some slides and a talk by Trevor about various aspects of the tram network. Of course we had myriads of questions for him, all of which he answered very patiently. He then took us into the actual Control Room which is the beating heart of the tram network. Fascinating doesn’t even cover it. I for one could have stopped there all day but all good things must come to an end and eventually it was time for us to leave, for most of us returning back to Hucknall on the tram of course!
Should any other group wish to organise a similar visit the people to contact are Customer Services tel 0115 942 7777 or . Trevor can accommodate groups of 10-15 people but there is not a lot of room to spare in the Control Room so smaller groups are preferable. There is no charge for the visits but you will have to fit in with available dates as apart from a busy schedule Trevor does go out to various organisations to educate them about the tram network.

Pot Luck Group Detective Walk

This month a group of the Pot Luck members had great fun on a Detective Walk around Nottingham. This was organised by a company called Cryptology which is based on Long Row near The Works. We had a clipboard with clues which guided us around a trail in typical ‘treasure hunt’ fashion. We had to look for clues, work out puzzles and track locations. We stopped half way round the 2.9 mile route for a cup of tea and a breather. The route took us to unfamiliar parts of Nottingham and we learned things about our home city that we had never known before. We would definitely recommend the activity if you want to get together with a few friends for ‘something different’.
This is the second activity some of us have done with Cryptology. We undertook the challenge in January of Cypherdyne, an escape room where you have 60 minutes to solve the clues and avoid catastrophe. We didn’t actually manage the challenge on this occasion and I won’t spoil what happens in case you want to try it. I would recommend this activity if you are technologically minded. We’ve looking forward to ‘The Crypt’ and Egyptian themed escape room too.
If you fancy your chances at the challenges have a word with me and I will explain to you how we managed to negotiate on price.

Pot Luck November

We had a very festive meeting in November which began in true Hucknall U3A style with lunch at ‘andwhynot’ restaurant in Mansfield followed by a production called Christmas Memories at the Palace Theatre.
The Christmas music, songs and carols accompanied by falling ‘snow’ were just the thing to get us into the Christmas Spirit (and spur us on to get that Christmas shopping done).

Group Visit to Toyota

We opened up our Pot Luck visit to the Toyota car plant to the general membership and 19 of us in total took part in this trip last Friday. We were all fascinated by the smooth production line processes and emphasis on quality workmanship in the factory. An excellent learning experience all round but the hard hats and safety glasses did nothing for our fashion credibility!
