The Mah Jong group meet from 7pm to 9pm on the second Friday of the month in the portakabin to the rear of the Catholic Church on Watnall Road, Hucknall.
The cost is currently £1 per person for the evening and includes light refreshments.
The game of Mah Jong was invented by the Chinese hundreds of years ago and means “The game of the sparrows” or “Sparrow tiles”. It is made up of a set of 144 tiles comprising of Bamboo, Circle and Character suits as well as Winds, Dragons and bonus tiles and the aim is to collect sets of tiles according to the number and type shown on the face of each tile. The game is effectively the same as the card game Rummy and initially appears to be very complicated. However, it is really quite simple when reduced to its basics and it is only the accompanying rituals such as “The twittering of the sparrows” when shuffling the tiles at the start of the game and the collection of Pungs, Kongs and Chows which make it seem more complicated.
This group is currently closed to new members. However, should enough people wish to learn how to play Mah Jong with a view to joining the main group please contact the co-ordinator Val Gant at the monthly meeting or by using the form below.
