Wine Tasting in March

We had a wonderful evening in March, when we went to the Theatre Royal Third Stage. Over 100 people took part in a ‘Chilled Guitar with Wine Tasting’ Experience. Top chef Heston Blumenthal reckons that music can twist your taste buds! Initially we thought this was a bit of a con but the consensus is; it was a very relaxed evening of wine tasting and the laid back guitar playing from Thomas Fripp was phenomenal. His chilled set of jazz standards and popular ballads were the perfect accompaniment to our guided tasting of eight wines, courtesy of Majestic Wines. A first rate learning/social experience.

Also in March, Sue Tedstone and Marilyn Gretton attended the Notts Network of U3A Wine Tasting Group Leaders. Although a little bit out of our depth, to say the least, we learned a few things to take back to our group. The meeting was hosted by Carlton and Gedling U3A at The Richard Herrod Centre. We are now on their e-mail contact list for ‘useful information’!

Wine Tasting Group visit Vineyard!

Our Wine Tasting Group, including all our ‘reserve’ members, visited Eglantine Vineyard in Costock in September. Tony and Veronica Skuriat have been developing their vineyard for over 30 years now and they produce 5,000 bottles of wine a year. The visit started in the vineyard with a very informative talk about the vines themselves. We then went into the winery where Tony gave us a tour of all the machinery involved in the wine making/bottling process. We then sniffed and slurped 5 wines – rose, white, mead, cherry and ice wine. We had an excellent time and learned more about tasting wine than we had done in 2 years!! Everyone bought goodies to take home; we had plenty of room in the minibus!!

Learning about Wine

Our Wine Tasting Group has been running for a year and a half now and we take it in turns to host it in our own homes.

Thinking of the U3A’s ethos of learning from each other/together John T. helped us learn all about Claret/Bordeaux this month. He provided four bottles of differing quality/prices and set out to teach us all about it! This wasn’t a blind-tasting like we usually do but a discussion on flavour and common characteristics. The big question is, “Will we be able to tell the difference between a Claret and a Merlot in the future?” Watch this space!!

Our two favourite wines were from M&S and unusually for us were the most expensive. Our overall winner, on this occasion, was ‘Mauregard’ Bordeaux (2013), costing £7.

One of us will contact you ASAP. Thank you.
